The World’s End

It’s been a while since I’ve done a movie review, and I can’t think of a better film to present to you than The World’s End, an apocalypse comedy starring Simon Pegg (Star Trek) and Nick Frost.

The British duo have been in several other stellar movies in recent years, including zombie-movie spoof Shaun of Dead and buddy-cop movie Hot Fuzz. Pegg and company are seriously talented and have never disappointed, and I really wish they got a bit more exposure here in the States – I can’t remember laughing so much from any other movie in recent memory.

The World’s End starts off with five friends who reunite to revisit “The Golden Mile,” an epic twelve-stop pub crawl that they never completed 20 years ago. They arrive at Newton Haven to begin their quest when they soon realize things are strangely off in this quaint town of their childhood years. I don’t want to go too much into the details, but from there the film quickly evolves into a masterful mix of tear-inducing humor and crazy turn-of-events.

In my humble opinion, this is Simon Pegg and Nick Frost’s best effort yet. With witty dialogue, ridiculous gags, a touch of action here and there, plus some great homages to sci-fi flicks of old (Gort, anyone?), this film executes its story flawlessly and does it without being overly-tasteless. There’s just enough crudeness to keep things fresh and funny, and just enough mystery to keep the audience guessing on what happens next. Basically, Pegg and company take the best storytelling aspects of several genres and change it up enough to make something old feel almost entirely new.

I can’t recommend this movie enough, and I’d say definitely give this one a shot, especially with the end-of-summer movies period typically seeing a lot of lower-quality films.
