What’s Up | 09/29/12

Hey all, just wanted to post some updates and share some things I’ve been thinking about the past few weeks. As most of you probably know, it’s my fourth year at Cal, and the beginning of senior year is usually one of the most stressful times for business majors, since we’re all looking for post-graduation jobs.

So my past few weeks have been pretty hectic and stressful. Info session after info session. Email follow-up after email follow-up. Pre-interview events. Case prep for interviews. Interviews. You get the idea.

With all that going on, I’ve still been trying to stay up-to-speed in school, which is pretty tough when you only have 24 hours in a day. But I think I’m managing, and it’s definitely more comforting to know that I’m not the only one going through this – this is college, after all.

The one thing I realized through all this is that I absolutely need to stay centered during trying times. I find that when I’m pursuing something, I start to adopt that specific mentality and lose sight of the big picture. When you’re looking for a specific job, it’s pretty natural to start thinking a lot about that job and modify your thoughts around that.

I try to remind myself to always take a step back and see what I really need, as opposed to what I really want at the moment. Emotions can be tricky, and sometimes it takes some willpower to step away from the fray and consider all possibilities.

This weekend, after a crazy week of interview prep, an interview, and school projects, I enjoyed a talent show, went to a concert, and attended a wedding with friends. I felt so much better and refreshed.

Watching the extremely gifted people perform at the talent show reminded me that everyone has strengths, and that those strengths can be used to bring happiness to others’ lives in some way, shape, or form. Attending the concert reminded me that having fun is equally important to working hard – and that music knows no bounds.

I was glad I went to the wedding, because it reminded me of the most valuable things in life – family, friends, and love. Seeing the bride and groom together as one, and how thankful they were to their parents, siblings, and friends, made me feel really happy – joyful, even.

With these experiences, I definitely feel refreshed, ready for the coming week. It’s not going to be easy, and it will probably get harder from here, but as long as I remember the bigger picture, and keep in mind the important things in life, things will turn out fine. We’ll all float on okay.
