Broomball

Played Broomball for the first time in my life tonight. Fun fun fun. I’m also in pain. But it was worth it.

ABA’s first social event of the semester had a musician theme. So the social kids dressed up as stars such as Taylor Swift, Lil Wayne, Lady Gaga, and of course, Justin Bieber.

They then proceeded to recruit the rest of us into their teams. I ended up with Lady Gaga. Go figure.

After the rules were explained, we stepped gingerly onto the ice. Just kidding. Everyone rushed onto the rink, geared up in awesome helmets, broomball-sticks in hand.

The dance music started, and off we went. We decided to play two teams on two, so there were probably 35-40 kids flailing around on the floor at the same time.

The rink was surprisingly not as slippery as I’d imagined. But it was the end of the day, so the ice was definitely roughed-up. Pretty soon, though, as the ice melted a little and smoothed out, it got really slippery.

And of course, the wipeouts began.

Kids were falling all over the place. Offense, defense, it didn’t matter. Some even flipped (including yours truly). But it was all so much fun.

It’s definitely harder hitting a foam ball around while trying to find traction with your tennis shoes and at the same time dodging five people who have their broomball sticks swinging at your shins.

I played both offense and defense, since there were two broomballs on the floor at a given time. And even though it was pretty cold, I started to sweat bucketfuls because the game was so intense.

Everywhere I went, there were angry broomball sticks attacking, legs a-kicking, and people colliding with each other and the floor.

But Team Lil Wayne-Gaga managed to outscore the Swift-Bieber duo, and our victory was complete with a clever “Record of the Year” trophy and mounds of candy.

What a fun night. I’m already looking forward to the next time I get to play broomball. Now to ice my back, shins, and wrists.
