Thoughts on Smartphones

I ran across this article today on The New York Times listing the total costs of owning the most popular smartphones, including the iPhone 4, HTC EVO, and Droid X, to name a few.

Without a family plan, these phones cost anywhere from $2,600 to $3,290 for a two year unlimited with data. Who seriously needs the Internet at that cost? It’s just ridiculous.

Granted, I was talking to Vincent about this observation today, and I found out that family plan with limited data is way less expensive than just getting a two year on your own.

Still, I don’t feel the urge to pay $30 a month for data. Even though I’m pretty obsessive over checking my email, most of the time, I’ll wait until I’m near a computer. There’s no need that I need to stay plugged in 24/7.

Plus, I get free Wi-Fi on campus. I’m perfectly happy with my 2G jailbroken iPhone. It’s been serving me well for almost two years now, and I don’t plan on upgrading until it dies.

Which brings me to my ideal phone. I hope that in the future, when I’m looking around for a new/replacement phone, I’ll find one that: a) Is very thin (like Nano-thin) b) Has a 5 megapixel or better camera c) Is able to make phone calls and text. That’s all I need.

I doubt they’ll ever make a cell phone like that, and I can see smartphones completely dominating the market (if they aren’t already) in the near future. But maybe an awesome innovator will see a niche for that kind of phone in the market…it doesn’t hurt to hope.
