Late Night Study Habits

I am a night-person. My mind is the most clear at night, so I tend to do a lot of my homework late at night. It’s 12:40 am, and I’m staring at a blank Word document, imagining four pages filled with genetics and plant biology. Time to blog.

I’ve always been most alert during night. I don’t know how I got through high school. It seemed like a dream – I have the sneaking suspicion that it was. Alarm going off at 7:15 am, snoozing until 7:45, rushing out of bed and in my car on the way to school at 7:55. Good times.

College is so much better for my sleep-wake schedule. I can finally sleep in a bit more. I feel better in the mornings and sleep later at night. I’m not saying this is better for me…I’m just saying that it fits me better.

Two things have really helped me sustain this bad habit – morning showers and power naps. I find that morning showers are very effective at waking me up and clearing my head. Ten to twenty-minute power naps do wonders to my efficiency. I just pull up “Echoes” by Pink Floyd and wake up when the song is over. All twenty-three minutes of it.

Eventually, I’ll slow down. I’ll get tired more easily and sleep earlier. But for the time being, I just can’t. A four-page essay doesn’t help much, either. I love college. And procrastination.
